Baldur Ortega was born to Orinn and Hilga Ortega (who died in child birth) in Akureyri, Iceland. He lived a pretty normal life on the family farm. His father was a lawyer but he had grown up on a farm so Baldur grew up on the farm too. He had a growing affection for animals and the outdoors.
His father also told him how to track and hunt prey and whenever they had a chance between court and school they would go hiking for hours in the hills behind their farm.
When he started learning to hunt his father never taught him with a gun saying any idiot could point and shoot but that archery was a skilled way of hunting and that you had to be closer to the animal then any gun bucket needed to be to take an animal down. True hunters used a bow, not a gun.
At the age of 9 he got his first bow, a regular bow that his dad always helped string as he never was and would never get very strong. But after he was about 13 he was able to string it himself and a few weeks later he got a recurve bow which never needed to be strung. They hunted almost every other weekend, usually small game like squirrels or rabbits as they were plentiful there and hard to take down. He always had fun with his dad.
But one day, when he was 17, they were hunting on their property, and some wandering hunter was there. Baldur and his father went to talk to the man. Baldur was about 10 feet away looking at the animal tracks. He didn't turn back when he saw a rabbit waiting outside its hole. He never did see his father again as he heard the gun go off and something heavy hit the ground and another round go off barely missing his ear. He ran for his life hiding behind a heavy oak tree.
He breathed heavy. Bow at the ready. He closed his eyes and tried to even his breaths. He tried to think over and over again to hide, to hide, be hidden, don't get caught. He opened his eyes to see the man right in front of Baldur but looking around as if he couldn't find him.
The man shouted countless mocking insults telling him to quit playing hide and seek and face his fate like his father. He looked at him curiously as the man couldn't see it evidently. The man started to walk away and turned back towards the oak as he heard a bow stretch taunt.
Baldur had pulled back and released an arrow that impacted right in and out of the main artery in the neck. The man touched the arrow before dropping to the ground.
A few days later his father was buried next to his mother and he mourned as he was now an orphan. Not even a day after the funeral he was found guilty of 2nd degree murder. Evidently the man had been a high figure in Iceland but the fact that the man killed his father meant nothing. But when the judge said he would be lenient as Baldur had lost his only family member and only send him to a school in Japan that was also a prison. PHS 650.
