There was once a powerful genie, whom the gods had blessed with great and elusive magic. She ruled over the many nations, each one cowering beneath her delicate foot. It was said that during her reign, her enemies disappeared, some turning to animals and others the gods gave to her as a gift for eternal youth. The genie was famed for her beauty and for her cruelty, any who opposed her were dismissed before any could stand behind them. She was a tyrant, killing many.
After 300 years of her tyranny, the people called out to the gods. They could no longer stand to be under her, for she killed when she saw fit. She also had many harems, filled with both women and men. Every beautiful child in the land was taken, raised until they came of age, then given to the powerful Genie. There was no end to her lust for flesh and for power.
The gods looked down and saw this, and realized their mistake of putting the genie into power. So they sent beautiful Rama with his wife Sita to her in the night, having given him a lamp. He told the genie that if she would go into the lamp, he would take her with him to heaven, where she would become a god. Driven by the hunger for power, the genie eagerly placed herself into the lamp. At that moment, the gods sealed her in, freeing the people of her tyranny. They put on it a seal that would last for over a thousand years.
Inside the lamp, the genie did not age. Due to the many essences she had stolen, she grew younger, from a woman who appeared in her early twenties to a mere girl of perhaps 16. Boredom quickly overtook the genie and she lay down, falling asleep. She slept for what seemed an eternity, the memories of her empire slipping away. The people went on under new rulers of their choosing, soon forgetting about the beautiful genie who had been so cruel.
After the Lamp
Now:
Asleep on a street, a girl was found in India. Those who found her were old and barren, and had always wished for a child. Taking her into their home, the girl was named Naia, for she was beautiful. A quiet girl, she had no memory of where she came from, only that she existed. The old couple cared for her for many months, until it was time for her to be sent to school.
On her way, she watched a snake charmer and became enthralled by the serpent. Giving the man a gold bracelet, she took the viper with her. Somehow the snake did not fear her, or she it. It slithered into the folds of her sari and there it remained.
Going to the local school, she was treated poorly for her lack of memory and for her apparent lack of custom. She behaved and spoke in an ancient manner, expecting those around her to do as she wished. The girl did not understand why, but it felt natural for others to obey her and she could not understand when they did not. Her second day at school, a boy told her to go and fetch his books. So shocked at his gall, Naia pulled out the viper. Kicking him hard, she allowed it to bite him then held the boy down as he died.
Due to her age, her guardians were charged with murder. Their options were death for their adopted daughter or sent away. Opting for the latter, the old couple sent their young Naia to a prison school in Japan. It was then that Naia realized not everyone upheld the same ideals as she did. The girl didn’t feel like a true part of those around her, and she hoped that this school would be different. Packing her silken clothing and her viper, she boarded the plane for Japan.
