History: Born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Luyu was raised primarily by her grandmother on their Pottawatomie reservation. She remembers bits and pieces of her mother, only that she got sick when Luyu was around ten. This was when the little girl’s world fell apart. They moved to Detroit and the little Pottawatomie was enlisted in the local gang. Climbing her way to the top through means she would rather not talk about, Luyu’s only reprieve was her Ninjitzu classes as well as her music lessons. It was here that she excelled, and her grandmother wrote her often telling that she prayed daily that her talents would grow.
Gaining a scholarship for music to a school in Washington State, Luyu’s grandmother scrounged up enough money to send her there. It was here that the young girl met her first love, a boy whose name she sadly cannot remember. All she remembers was that there was two of him and that he covered himself in bandages. She also remembers that he disappeared after going through ridiculous means to procure her a matching diamond bracelet and necklace. Once he disappeared, Luyu devoted herself completely to her music. It was then that she decided she was unlovable, receiving a letter of her mothers’ death. She had been caught in the crossfire from a gang war, shortly after receiving notice that she was completely cancer free.
Returning to Detroit, Luyu attended her mothers funeral. There were only a few people there, and the young woman had the sorest throat she could ever remember. She later accompanied the body back to her reservation for a tribal burial. Her grandmother oo’d and ah’d over her diamond jewelry, asking what boy she had gotten them from. She never responded. Instead she went outside and screamed. Luyu screamed and screamed. It felt good, scratching at her already raw throat. The scream ended and she closed her mouth. Opening her eyes, she saw that the trees around her had seemed to bend away from her, all of their leaves had fallen to the ground. It was then that Luyu discovered her Qi: she could manipulate sound waves.
After four years of High School, Luyu Kodiak got another music scholarship to a school in Oxford. She spent four years there and was a salutatorian at the prestigious school. She received her Bachelor’s in Vocal Performance. She went on to give voice lessons, teaching others the way of her second love: music. Returning to America, she went back to school and got her Graduate in Classical Composition. All of these accomplishments she had done without her Qi, convinced that to do so would be to cheat. Having her masters in Classical Composition, Luyu began teaching Orchestra and Choir at a High School in Colorado.
It was then that she moved, on a whim. She moved to New Zealand, and started to again go to school. Her grandmother was long dead and she had never been loved since the boy in High School, so she had no ties. She got her doctorate in piano composition. At this point in her life, Luyu was bored. She was at the peak of her education and began looking for a job. There was an opening for a Vocal/Orchestra Instructor in a new school in Japan that piqued her interest. Packing her bags, Dr. Luyu Kodiak, PhD, headed for her new life.
